Who knew that tucked into the heart of Poughkeepsie, New York, you'd find a slice of Sweden waiting for you? Fika & Hygge is one of those cool, modern cafés that immediately makes you feel like you've stepped into a design magazine—clean lines, minimalistic charm, and a vibe that says “stay a while.”
I popped in recently and was instantly charmed. Beyond the beautiful Nordic aesthetic, they offer something you don’t see every day in the Hudson Valley: an entire wall of Swedish candy. Yes, a wall, well technically 3 walls!
I tried an assortment of sweets—honestly, how could I not? My absolute favorite was this giant marshmallow shaped like a strawberry. Soft, fluffy, and nostalgic in the best way. I also got a kick out of the humor behind some of the selections—there was one called "Grandma’s Dentures" that gave me a good laugh. And if you're a licorice lover, you're in for a treat. They have a whole section dedicated to it, plus a huge selection of vegan and sugar-free candies that made me appreciate how inclusive and thoughtful their offerings are.
As for drinks, I tried the June special: a Chai Rose. It was fragrant, floral, and a touch sweet. I’ll admit, I’m super picky about chai—I usually want something spicy and bold—but this was still a lovely, mellow twist on a classic. If you like rose lattes, you’ll enjoy it!
Poughkeepsie may not always get the spotlight, but it's places like Fika & Hygge that make me love this little river town even more. Between charming bookstores, hidden cafés, and creative spaces like this, there are real gems to be discovered here.
