France to Haiti in One Sip: Brunching at Anna et Pierre

If you're in the Hudson Valley and craving a coffee shop experience that feels both refined and rooted in culture, then Anna et Pierre in Poughkeepsie, New York, is an absolute must. This modern café incredibly combines French pastry elegance with a Haitian soul, all in a clean, thoughtfully designed space that invites you to slow down, relax, and savor. You can tell their beautiful interior has been inspired by the chic Manhattan cafés that are only a few hours away.

Pastries and coffee at Anna et Pierre

The shop is owned by a local woman whose Haitian grandparents inspired much of the menu. You’ll find those heritage threads woven throughout—from bold, rich Haitian cold brew to savory croissant sandwiches and spiced flavors that nod to tradition in a very subtle, elegant way. I love that she works with her partner at this cafe. You can feel their love through the superb service and attention they give each patron. You can see a cute cartoon version of both of her behind the counter, and him making the coffee. I think it reflects the creativity that is threaded throughout the café.

Thick, Flaky, and Golden

The pastries here are nothing short of beautiful. Their croissants are thick and flaky, the kind that shatter just right when you bite in. I had what I would describe as a kouign-amann stuffed with sausage (pictured above) that was perfectly caramelized and layered like a dream. There’s also a ham and cheese croissant that hits all the savory notes, and a delicate almond croissant dusted with powdered sugar.

Coffee with Culture

I can’t talk about Anna et Pierre without mentioning Haitian coffee. It’s deep, smooth, and comforting, with a richness that lingers. Whether you order it hot or iced, you’ll get a sense of place with every sip. Paired with one of their croissants, it’s the kind of breakfast that feels both luxurious and deeply personal.

Clean Aesthetic, Cozy Feel

The interior is sleek and modern—black tables, warm wood details, and plenty of light. It feels upscale without being cold. Whether you’re popping in for a pastry or settling in with a laptop, it’s a lovely place to be.
