Nestled within the Mohonk Preserve Bonticou Crag is a stunning yet challenging hike that requires a pass. The day pass costs $9 and for those looking for unlimited access, an annual membership starts at $70.
My husband, Ben, and I have a moderate love for hiking—we enjoy it, but we’re far from extreme hikers. Recently, we tackled Bonticou Crag with friends, and I’ll admit, I was terrified. Why? Rock scrambling.
Since moving to the Hudson Valley, I’ve heard whispers of hikes that involve scrambling up steep rock faces, and I’ve always avoided them. The thought of any chance—however small—that I could plummet to my doom? No, thank you. But there I was, standing at the base of the crag, surrounded by my love and good friends, about to do just that.
Was I dramatic? Absolutely. Did I almost psych myself out? Of course. But was it as bad as I imagined? Not at all!
The hike was lovely, and for those who prefer to skip the scramble, there’s an alternate route around it. We went straight up, though, and while it wasn’t easy (upper body strength is not my strong suit), it was doable—and more than that, it was fun.
The summit view is breathtaking, making every ounce of effort worth it. I highly recommend this hike, but maybe not for grandma—unless she’s super sporty and athletic, in which case, bring her along!
Pack a snack, soak in the sun, and give yourself more than just a minute to take it all in. It’s worth it.
